Abstract
This study aimed to verify the possibility that the suicide loss (suicidal experience of neighbours and friends) affects copycat suicide of the elderly and the risk factors that affect their suicide when they have experienced suicide loss. Based on this, this study inspected how much suicide loss has influence on three stages of the elderly regarding suicide such as suicidal ideation, suicidal plan and suicidal attempt, respectively. And also this study checked the influence of the previous stage on the following one based on the three stages of elderly suicide. For this study, we surveyed elderly people who are over 65 years old and living in five districts in Seoul. Total 100 questionnaires were used for comprehensive analysis. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, 20%(20 persons) of the elderly in the study had experience of suicide loss. Second, it was found that the experience of suicide loss significantly affects suicidal ideation, plan and attempt of the elderly, which means higher suicide loss could lead to higher suicidal ideation, plan and attempt of the elderly. Third, significant influences were found three stages of elderly suicide focused on the controlled variables. The degree of suicidal ideation tended to be higher when respondents lived alone, their educational levels were lower and their depression levels were higher; the degree of suicidal plan were higher when their educational levels were lower, their depression levels were higher and they have little support systems; and the degree of suicidal attempt were higher when their economic status were higher and they have little support systems. Lastly, each suicidal stage appeared to be affected by the previous stage of suicide. Based on the findings, this study proposed practical and policy suggestions to prevent and intervene in elderly suicide in effective ways based on the community.
